SKILLMAN, N.J. - After a fantastic 2014 spring season which saw the Huskies finish first in the MAC in the regular season, the team has garnered further recognition on a regional scale. The recently released Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Rankings have NIU pegged as the ninth best team in the region.
"This was another record breaking year for Huskie tennis," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. Never has this been accomplished in back-to-back years in all of our tennis history. To see where this program was in 2009 when I got here to where we are now is simply amazing."
Also receiving recognition are two star athletes who put in an outstanding season at doubles, Axel Lagerlof and Dor Amir. Finishing the spring with an 18-2 record, the pairing was ranked eighth in the Midwest among doubles tandems. This adds to their list of accolades, as they were named MAC Doubles Team of the Week five times in 2014, and both were honored as First Team All-MAC players. Amir also earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC team.
"It's rare these days you build a program that wins in the classroom with three Academic All-MAC athletes and on the courts with the 2014 MAC Championship," added Fisher. "It's really a credit to the type of kids we have in our program. These guys, they love winning."
This marks the second year in a row in which the Huskies have received a regional ranking. In 2013, the ITA marked NIU down as the No. 10 team in the Midwest.
