DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team returns to action this weekend when heads to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Invitational. It will be the second-consecutive season the Huskies will head to Bulldog country for the fall classic.
Host school Drake will welcome Creighton, Gustavus Adolphus, Iowa, Northern Colorado and North Dakota.
Head Coach Patrick Fisher talked about last weekend's results and what the Huskies will be looking for this weekend.
"Overall we had six people in the finals of the nine finals at River Forest and that was a good thing, considering we only had a week of practice," said Fisher. "I think we're off to a pretty good start and Drake runs a nice, competitive tournament down there. We're just looking to build off from where we were last week at River Forest."
At last season's Drake Invitational, Axel Lagerlof reached the final, carrying with him a seven match winning streak. However, the Malmo, Sweden native lost to Drake Anis Ghorbel, 6-2, 6-2. Lagerlof was the only Huskie to reach a front draw final.
The Huskies opened the fall tennis season in state at the River Forest Invitational last weekend, winning three flights of nine on the clay surface.
Sophomore Frederic Cadieux won the first flight and defeated teammate Dor Amir in the final, 7-6, 6-2. Newcomer Simon Formont won the fourth flight in stellar fashion and highlighted his flight championship with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Youngstown State's Rodrigo Campos.
In the first doubles flight, Amir and Cadieux teamed up with two-straight wins and won the final over NIU teammates Axel Lagerlof and Formont, 8-4, to claim their third win of the tournament.
Junior transfer Jovan Zeljkovic also played well at the tournament, winning his first two matches in the third flight, but lost to Belmont's Fernando Mussolini, 6-3, 6-4.
Northern Illinois will close its fall season Oct. 18 when it heads to East Lansing, Mich. for the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Michigan State.
