DES MOINES, Iowa - Northern Illinois' men's tennis team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, September 20 to participate in the Drake Invitational. There, players from NIU have competed against players from seven other universities, including Creighton, Drake, Gustavus Adolphus, North Dakota, Northern Colorado, UMKC, and Nebraska-Omaha. Since the start on Friday afternoon, a good bit of the tournament has been played through. Today, the final day of tournament, the rest of the singles brackets will be played out, and NIU players can still come away with victories in the singles brackets.
Simon Formont and Carlos Manzanas are competing in the same bracket, the B Flight Singles. At the start of today's matches, both players are in the semi-finals. Formont is taking on Harrison Lang from Creighton in the bottom half of the bracket, and Manzanas is set to play Andres Sainz from Gustavus Adolphus. Potentially, NIU could have both players make the finals, guaranteeing that the Huskies take home a flight victory in the tournament.
Other players from NIU have not quite been as successful, however. Axel Lagerlof, Fred Cadieux, and Dor Amir were all unable to win their second matches. Matt Lynch and Jovan Zeljkovic were both able to reach the quarterfinals of their flights, but that's where their play in the main brackets ended.
"So far, we have seen some improvements in areas we wanted to get better at from the previous week," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher after Saturday's matches. "We still have such a long ways to go. We really just need to make better decisions on the court. Watching our guys beat themselves is hard to watch. The reality is we need to be more disciplined, and that means making a commitment to do it. Right now, we aren't committed to going through the pain to do it, so there's the challenge to our guys."
Doubles play was the theme on Friday, and in those matches, NIU had three teams competing in addition to Manzanas teaming up with Jared Vigen from North Dakota. Out of the NIU teams, Lynch and Zlejkovic were able to reach the final round of the B Flight Doubles bracket. However, they were unable to pull out the win, falling in a close 8-6 match against Brian Miles and Logan Peterson from Gustavus Adolphus.
The singles matches will conclude today, and with that, NIU will have completed its second event of the fall schedule. Following the completion of matches on Sunday, the Huskies will have two weeks to prepare for the USTA JSM $50,000 Challenger in Champaign, Ill. on Saturday, October 5.
