DeKALB, Ill. - Following an 11-day break from competition, the Northern Illinois men's tennis team will return to action this weekend in South Bend, Ind. for the Tom Fallon Invitational. The three day hidden-dual format invite will feature some of the nation's top competition, including host Notre Dame.
"This is a pretty good tournament for us to play in," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher, "it's going to be a good test for us against some pretty good teams with Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame finishing last season ranked nationally."
The aforementioned team's all closed the 2012 season with the following rankings: No. 21 Michigan, No. 29 Notre Dame, No. 48 Alabama, No. 53 Michigan State. The Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they made it the second round of play before falling to No. 13 seed Ole Miss.
The Huskies faired well at their last competition, the Drake Invitational, as they won four flights of a total nine in Des Moines, Iowa. Simon Formont, Axel Lagerlof and Jovan Zeljkovic all won their respective flights in singles play. In doubles, Formont and Lagerlof teamed up to dominate the competition in their respective flight. Overall as a team, NIU finished 22-6 at the Drake Invitational.
Formont is the only Huskie to remain undefeated this season with a stellar 6-0 mark. Others leading the way are Frederic Cadieux, Lagerlof and Zeljkovic with a 5-1 singles record.
Northern Illinois will return to play Oct. 18 for the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Michigan State.
