DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois' men's tennis team is headed to Champaign, Ill. for a USTA JSM Qualifier. It will be held at the Atkins Tennis Center, the home of the University of Illinois' men's tennis team. Participants have the opportunity to compete for a spot in a USTA event in November, the JSM $50,000 challenger.
Any of the Huskies can secure a spot in the main event, also held in Champaign, Ill. They'll be competing against some of the best tennis players from around the world for that spot. Players who have competed in the past include professional tennis players Jack Sock, Tim Smyczek, Devin Britton, and Austin Krajicek.
The Atkins Tennis Center has six indoor courts and 20 outdoor courts. All of the courts at the complex are hard courts. Hard courts vary in game speed. They generally play faster than clay courts, but not quite as fast as grass courts. The advantage of a hard court is that the bounce off of the court is more consistent than other surfaces.
Play in the qualifier will be conducted over the weekend, with the conclusion coming on Sunday, October 4. If any Huskies goes deep into the tournament, he might come away with a spot in the Challenger, which starts on November 11.
