DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team will close its fall season this week when it heads to the ITA Midwest Regional at Michigan State.The Huskies have two players in this year's singles main draw and four more in the qualifying draw at the tournament. The tournament will run Oct. 18-22.
"We're excited for this weekend and looking forward to having a good showing at Michigan State," said Head coach Patrick Fisher, "I think the last tournament at Notre Dame was a good taste of what we'll see at MSU, with some of the best teams in the nation at the Midwest regional."
Huskies Axel Lagerlof and Dor Amir were entered into the tournament's main draw beginning Friday, while the Frederic Cadieux, Simon Formont, Max Phillips and Jovan Zeljkovic will begin play tomorrow in the qualifying draw.
NIU was last in action at the Tom Fallon Invitational in South Bend, Ind., where the Huskies faired well against nationally ranked programs from last spring in Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Northern Illinois was strong in doubles play with a combined 5-2 mark on the weekend and were 7-12 in singles play.
Amir was the Huskies top player on the weekend, finishing with a 2-1 singles record and 1-1 doubles record to earn all-tournament honors. Lagerlof also finished 2-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play during the weekend. Simon Formont, a freshman from Orléans, France, earned his first collegiate losses at Notre Dame after entering play with an undefeated 6-0 record.
The Huskies will return to action for its spring season in Jan. 2013.
