EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Max Phillips advanced to final round of the qualifying draw Thursday with a pair of wins for a chance to play in the main draw of ITA Midwest Regional with teammates Axel Lagerlof and Dor Amir.
"Overall we did not have the day we were expecting," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher, "We had a ton of opportunities that we did not capitalize on. With that being said, Max took advantage of his opportunities and capitalized on his chances and had a huge three set win in the second round. It was awesome to see him pull through. Tomorrow's a big day for Max so that he can qualify for the main draw."
Philips, a native of Berkhamstead, England, opened the day with a stellar 6-3, 6-0 victory over Michigan State's Tyler Richmond and grinded out a spectacular three set victory over Ali Shabib of Cleveland State. Phillips triumphed in the first set, 6-1, and fell to Shabib in the second, 6-2. In the final set, the two players battled it out but Phillips came up victorious in the rumble, 7-6.
He will meet Notre Dame's Mike Moore tomorrow morning for the No. 2 qualifying spot. The winner will take on Michigan's Alex Petrone, the ITA's reigning Rookie of the Year in the Midwest region.
