Dubuque, Iowa - Several members of the Northern Illinois University wrestling team opened the New Year Dubuque, Iowa to compete in the "Flash" Flanagan Open Jan. 2 at Loras College.
The Huskies' roster, comprised of a junior, three sophomores and nine freshmen, placed 10 wrestlers including three champions. Freshman Curtis Blaydes (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) took home the title at 285, going 3-0 on the day, defeating teammate Zak Saevre (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon), 12-8, in the championship match.
Freshman Zach Neibert (Dayton, Ohio/St. Paris Graham Local) went 3-0 en route to the 149 title, while fellow freshman Vincent Fairbairn (Midwest City, Okla./Carl Albert) took two out of three at 174 to win that weight class. Other notables included Chris Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./Bloom Trail) and Trevor Parlberg (Woodstock, Ill./Crystal Lake) took second at 157 and 197 respectively.
Dan Burk (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 2-2, to finish third at 165. Chris Heading (Bloomingdale, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) went 1-2 to place third at 133, while Chris Smith (Portland, Maine/Deering) took fourth at 133. Shane Rosenberry (Lancaster, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) placed third at 184, going 2-2 on the day.
The Huskies (6-3) return to the mat Jan. 14 when they travel to Athens, Ohio to open Mid-American Conference action against the Ohio Bobcats.
