Bryan Deutsch Wins Fifth Straight
Jan. 14, 2011
DEKALB, Ill. - Senior Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) extended his winning streak to five matches, however the Northern Illinois University wrestling team suffered a 30-11 setback at the hands of Ohio in Victor E. Court Friday night.
Deutsch was one of three Huskies to score a victory against the Bobcats. Izzy Montemayor (Round Lake Heights, Ill./Grant Community) started things off right for the Huskies (2-8, 0-2) with a 9-1 major decision win over Jacob Wojcik to give NIU the 4-0 lead. However, Ohio would post wins in the next two matches to take a 7-4 advantage heading into 157.
Deutsch scored a 10-2 major decision victory over the Bobcats' Casey Gordon at 157 pounds to put the Huskies up by one with six matches left to go. His win was his fifth straight and he's won six of his last seven bouts. Matt Mougin (Columbus Junction, Iowa/Columbus) suffered a tough 7-5 loss at 165 giving Ohio a 10-8 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.
The Bobcats (4-3, 1-0) would win four of the next five matches on the evening including pins at 197 and 125. Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) posted the lone Huskie win in the second half, an 8-1 decision over Ryan Garringer.
"We wrestled a little flat," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "We wrestled some pretty tough competition last week and I just didn't feel our team wrestled as intense as they did last week. It will happen.
"We'll get back in the wrestling room, work harder and keep our heads up. We'll stick to the script on what we're teaching them as far as being aggressive, getting your shots."
The Huskies return to action Jan. 21 when Northern Illinois travels to Kent, Ohio to take on Kent State. First bout is set to begin at 6 p.m. CST.
