DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team turned in a dominating performance as it coasted to a 42-0 victory over SIU-Edwardsville Friday night in Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center.
"I was pretty pleased with our aggressiveness," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "Overall, it was a good performance from all our guys. It's something we can build for next weekend when we go to Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan."
The Huskies (8-7, 0-2) recorded two pins, two major decisions and two technical falls on the night and saw the return of two wrestlers who have been off the mat for a few weeks. Patrick McLemore (Hinckley, Ohio/Padua Franciscan), who has missed NIU's last four matches, shook off the rust by posting a 6-3 victory over SIUE's Dillon Pousson at 141 to open the scoring for the Huskies. Tristen DeShazer (Wichta, Kan./Wichita West), who had not wrestled since the Midlands Championships, scored a 12-6 victory over Brendan Murphy at 133 in the final match of the night.
While every NIU wrestler came away a winner Friday night, several Huskies distinguished themselves in the eyes of the coaching staff.
"I liked the way Izzy Montemayor wrestled hard," Grant said. Another young guy in our program that I'm happy with, he's getting better every weekend, is Zach Benzio. He's making strides. John Odeen was very aggressive. He had a good win."
Montemayor was aggressive in his match at 125, jumping out to a 9-1 lead after the first period before pinning Dustin Young 52 seconds into the second period. Benzio opened a 6-1 advantage over Robert Cooney in the first period of their contest, extended it to 7-1 after the second and scored four points in the third to earn the 11-1 major decision victory at 184. Odeen recorded four near falls and four takedowns in his 17-2 technical fall over Lenny Kuspa.
Other notables for NIU included Bryan Deutsch
(Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) and Mason True
(Arcadia, Ohio/Arcadia). Deutsch extended his winning streak to six with a 7-3 decision over Steve Ross at 157, while True earned a technical fall, defeating Tim Mahoney, 19-2, at 174.
The Huskies return to action Friday, Feb. 5 when NIU travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan. The match begins at 6 p.m. CST.
