NIU Grapplers Battle for Starting Spots 2010 Huskie Wrestle-Offs
Nov. 5, 2010
DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team held its annual Huskie Wrestle-Offs Friday night in Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center. Twenty wrestlers, 10 of which were either freshmen of redshirt freshmen, faced off against each other looking to fill 10 starting spots on the Huskie roster for 2010-11.
With all the new faces and returning talent driving competition among the Huskies, NIU head coach Dave Grant was pleased with what he saw and feels it will help the team get to where it wants to be.
"This year, it is a nice situation because everybody's working really hard to make the team. Even your best guys," Grant said. "It makes for a hungry bunch of wrestlers.
"Overall, I was very impressed with the work ethic and how our guys were competing against each other."
The marquee match-up of the evening was at 141 pounds where seniors, Patrick McLemore (Hinckley, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and Tristen DeShazer (Wichita Kan./Wichita West), squared off. Both are national qualifiers, with DeShazer moving up a weight class. With the match tied at 1-1 after the third period, McLemore scored a takedown in overtime to win, 3-1.
Another interesting bout took place at 184 with the return of junior Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) to the mat as he took on freshman Charles Argue (Matteson, Ill./Mt. Carmel). Dieckhaus, who redshirted last season, wasted little time jumping out to a commanding 7-0 lead after the first period. He defeated Argue, 15-5.
Freshman Sam Bennett (Anderson, Ind./Anderson Highland) gave senior Bryan Deutsch (Columbia, Ind./Columbia City) a run for his money at 157. Trailing 2-0 heading into the second period, Bennett closed the gap to 5-4 before Deutsch put the match away in the third period with a takedown to win, 8-5.
Kevin Fanta (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) posted a 3-1 overtime victory over Izzy Montemayor (Round Lake Heights, Ill./Grant Community), who was also move up a weight, at 133. Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) looked solid in his 9-5 decision over Chris Smith at 125.
Other winners included Vince Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) at 149, Zach Benzio (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) at 174, Mike Lukowski (East Dundee, Ill./Harper College) at 197 and the Heavyweight title went to veteran Dakota Greenhaw (Monett, Mo./Monett).
The Huskies open the 2010-11 season Saturday, Nov. 13 when NIU travels to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in the Michigan State Open. The competition starts at 8 a.m.
