WEST LaFAYETTE, Ind. - The Northern Illinois wrestling team opened the dual meet season with a 35-4 victory over Campbellsville, Saturday, at the Boilermaker Challenge.

Redshirt sophomores Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan., Wichita West) and Vince Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) both pinned their opponents, while Mike Ryan (Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) both earned major decisions.

DeShazer pinned Tommy Pretty at 133 pounds in 2:41, giving the Huskies six points. Castillo followed by sticking Aaron Smith in the second round. Deutsch's victory at 157 came by a 9-1 major decision against Josh Ashbrook.

Deutsch scored four points in the second period, including a three-point near fall, to secure the win. Ryan scored an 11-1 win over Kevin Cloran at 149 pounds, propelled by four takedowns.

The night was full of fresh faces in the Cardinal and Black, as six Huskies made their official competitive debut. True freshmen Izzy Montemayor (Barrington, Ill./Grant Community), Derrick Yant (Delta, Ohio/Pike-Delta-York), and Zak Saevre (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) all picked up victories, as did redshirt freshman Scott Penny (Granite City, Ill./Granite City).

The Huskies early success didn't translate to later in the day, as NIU fell to Tennessee-Chattanooga, 28-12, and lost to Purdue 32-9.

Against UT-Chattanooga, both Montemayor and Castillo picked up wins. Wrestling at 125 pounds, Montemayor defeated Paul Garza, 4-1. Castillo took out Bennett Johnson by a score of 5-0.

In the Purdue match, DeShazer scored a big win at 133, pinning Jake Fleckenstein in just 24 seconds. Saevre also won his bout against the Boilermakers, edging Christopher Kasten with a 3-2 decision.

The Huskies continue the year at the Nebraska-Omaha Open, Saturday, Nov. 22.
