Bryan Deutsch Places at 48th Annual Midlands
Dec. 30, 2010
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northern Illinois University senior Bryan Deutsch took home seventh place at 157 at the 48th Annual Midlands Championship at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena Thursday.
"Bryan had an outstanding tournament," NIU head coach Dave Grant. "His national rankings should go up after this tournament. Each match he wrestled better. Finishing up with a pin at Midlands to take seventh place is outstanding."
Deutsch, a native of Columbia City, Ind., defeated Donnie Tasser by pinfall in 2:26. It was Deutsch's second victory by pinfall of the day and the tournament.
He began the day with a pinfall victory in 2:52 over Aaron Sulzer of Eastern Michigan. However, he suffered a loss by pinfall to No. 1 seed Jake Patacsil in 2:22, ending Deutsch's chances of finishing higher than seventh.
Freshman Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) won his initial match of the second day, defeating Lehigh's Mitch Berger, 12-6, at 125. His outstanding run in his first career Midlands Tournament came to an end as Smith suffered a 13-2 major decision to No. 3 Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma.
Senior Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) was unable to carry over his spectacular performance from Day One into the final day of competition. His day ended almost before it began when he lost his first bout of the day to Nick Dardanes, 13-7, ending his final Midlands Tournament for NIU. He did earn fastest pin honors. His pinfall of No. 9 seed Trevor Melde of Rutgers in 15 seconds yesterday was the fastest pinfall of the 2010 Midlands Championship.
As a team, the Huskies finished 21st with 25 points. Missouri took first place in the field of 44 teams with 100.5 points. Northern Illinois recorded five pins during the tournament, two each by DeShazer and Deutsch and one by Vince Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township).
"Overall, it was a good showing," Grant said. "A lot of our points scored came from our pins."
The Huskies return to the mat Thursday night when Northern Illinois plays host to Central Michigan in Victor E. Court at the NIU Convocation Center. First match begins at 7 p.m.
