DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team rings in the new year at home Saturday when they host in-state rival SIU Edwardsville.

The meet gets underway at 3 p.m. inside Victor E. Court. Prior to Huskies-Cougars, the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation will host a dual featuring the top wrestlers from the state’s North and West regions.

“Coach (Jeremy) Spates has his team wrestling well and this is a great in-state challenge for both programs,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “Illinois is an outstanding wrestling state and it means a great deal to be able to have two in-state Division I programs battle on a yearly basis.”

NIU gets back into dual action after competing at the Midlands Championships last weekend in Evanston, Ill. Headlining the tournament for NIU was junior Tyler Argue, who placed eighth at 141 pounds. Meanwhile, Andrew Morse also advanced to the tournament’s second day before falling in his placing match.

On the other side, SIUE comes into the meet with a 3-7 dual record. So far in 2013-14, the Cougars have defeated VMI, Northern Colorado and Drexel, but have also taken on six teams from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12. Individually, they are led by sophomore Jake Residori at 174 and redshirt senior David Devine at heavyweight.

Scouting SIU Edwardsville
SIU Edwardsville comes into this weekend’s dual with a 3-7 record on the year. Prior to competing at Midlands last weekend, the Cougars dropped a 36-6 decision at Northwestern on Dec. 15. SIUE’s three victories this season all came at the Hoosier Duals Dec. 7-8, as they knocked off VMI (23-14), Northern Colorado (25-17) and Drexel (26-12) in Bloomington, Ind. Overall, their schedule has been one of the toughest in the country, as the Cougars have faced four Big Ten schools (Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern and Purdue), along with Arizona State and West Virginia. NIU leads the all-time series with SIUE, 24-2-1, and won last year’s meeting, 31-13, in Edwardsville.

No Argue-ment
Junior Tyler Argue turned in an impressive performance by placing eighth at 141 pounds in the 51st annual Midlands Championships. The Chicagoland area native went 3-3 in the tournament with wins over Avery Garner of Utah Valley and Sahid Kargbo of George Mason, along with an injury default victory over Lehigh’s Will Switzer. Additionally, Argue’s three losses came at the hands of the tournament’s ninth-seeded (Indiana’s Ethan Raley) and 12th-seeded (Northwestern’s Pat Greco) wrestlers at 141, in addition to a two-time Division II All-American (Adams State’s Ryan Fillingame).

Staying In-State
Saturday’s dual against SIU Edwardsville marks the end of a month-and-a-half long stretch where the Huskies have not left the state of Illinois for competition. Since traveling to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the EMU Duals, NIU has hosted four duals (five including Saturday) and traveled to Evanston, Ill., for the Midlands Championships.

Dual-ly Noted
While the Huskies only have three meets the entire month of December, January will be much busier. In total, NIU will have seven duals on six dates, including four MAC matchups. The only home dates in that stretch are Jan. 4 vs. SIU Edwardsville and Jan. 25 vs. Missouri.

Up Next...
The Huskies go out of state for the first time in almost two months next week, as they travel to Athens, Ohio, to face the Ohio Bobcats Friday, Jan. 10. The meet begins at 6 p.m. CT inside OU’s Convocation Center.
