No. 23 Northern
Illinois Wrestling Improves MAC Record To 2-0 After 29-9 Road Win
No. 23-ranked Northern Illinois University jumped out to an early
10-0 lead en route to a 29-9 Mid-American Conference dual-meet victory
over Ohio University Friday (Jan. 20) night in wrestling. The Huskies
bounced back after struggling against two Top 10 teams last Saturday
(Jan. 14) at the National Duals in Cedar Falls, IA. Northern Illinois'
victory improves the Huskies' conference record to 2-0 and its overall
dual slate to 5-4.
real hard and competed well tonight," said Huskie mat boss
Dave Grant. "We definitely capitalized on our conditioning
tonight. We had quite a few major decisions and our guys were going
for more than wins tonight; they were out there to be dominant and
score points. That is what we coaches have been talking about all
entered the dual match as the clear favorite with five ranked wrestlers
and the Huskies did not fail to impress the crowd. In the night's
opening match 197-pounder Derek Hunsinger (El Paso) got NIU off
to a strong start with a 7-5 decision over Ohio's Nick Terbay. Hunsinger's
win was followed by No. 19 Joe Sapp's (Mahomet / Mahomet Seymour)
4-1 decision at heavyweight and No. 10 Pat Castillo's (Western Springs
/ LaGrange Lyons Twp.) 13-4 major decision victory in the 125-pound
bout. Castillo continues to wrestle well for the Huskies and improved
his season record to 19-5 and 2-0 in the MAC. Castillo has not lost
a match since falling to Michigan State University's Nick Simmons
in the championship match at the Midlands in late December. In fact,
Castillo has won seven of his last eight matches.
After Andy Hiatt
(DeKalb) dropped a close fought 2-0 match to Terry Jackson in the
133-pound match, No. 11 Josh Wooton (Urbana, OH / Graham) and No.
13 Mike Grimes (Villa Park / Lombard Montini) picked up a pair of
major decision victories at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Wooton's
14-2 decision extended the Huskies lead to 11 points. And after
Grimes' 12-4 decision, Northern Illinois held a commanding 18-3
lead over the host Bobcats.
Frerichs 6-2 decision over Kalen Knull (Urbana, OH / Graham) in
the 157-pound match pulled OU back to within 12, but 165-pounder
Johnny Galloway (Iowa City, IA) came through for the Huskies with
a 21-6 technical fall victory over Kent Smith. Galloway's dominating
performance secured the Huskies win.
was obviously very aggressive," said Grant. "I haven't
seen him on his feet like that before where he was very tenacious
and trying to score and score. Castillo and Wooton were both the
same way. Overall it was a great night and I think the key to our
success was our intensity and tenacious style."
In the night's
final two matches, NIU 174-pounder and No. 20 Danny Burk (Peoria
/ Notre Dame) won by injury default while 184-pounder Nick McClone
(East Peoria / Metamora) fell to Brian Cesar in the final match.
When the dust settled on the Huskies and Bobcats Friday night, Northern
Illinois answered all questions as the Huskies continue to roll
along towards an eventual showdown with MAC powerhouse No. 6 Central
Michigan University on Feb. 10, in Mount Pleasant, MI.
returns to action Sunday (Jan. 22) when it face Lock Haven University
at 10 a.m. and Davidson College at 2 p.m. (EST) at the Wendy's Classic
in Ashland, OH.
