DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team wraps up a brief two-game road trip when the Huskies face Northern Iowa at the West Gym Friday night.
"We need to rebound from last week," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "We've wrestled tough all year. I thought we had a letdown last week, not closing the door on some situations. Within a season, that can happen.
"We need to come out and be ready to wrestle and get some of that fire back that we had at the National Duals. Being physical and being aggressive are going to be the keys for us tomorrow."
The Huskies (2-9, 0-3) suffered a 37-6 loss at Kent State last week. Senior Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) scored the lone victory for NIU, pinning Sean Collins 28 seconds into the second period. Once again, the Huskies were on the short end of three matches that were decided by three points or less. Matt Mougin (Columbus Junction, Iowa/Columbus) suffered a 7-4 loss at 165 and Dakota Greenhaw (Monett, Mo./Monett) fell, 4-1, at 285. Izzy Montemayor (Round Lake Heights, Ill./Grant Community) was edged out, 6-4 at 133.
Despite their struggle in recent weeks, Grant is pleased with the work ethic his team has demonstrated the past few weeks.
"They've been working really hard on their intensity this week," he said. "We're moving into February, so we're starting to shorten our practices and we start to work on our intensity more. Our guys are in great shape. They just need to carry their intensity from practice into their matches."
The first bout between the Huskies and Panthers is set for 7 p.m. CT.
