DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team takes a break from Mid-American Conference action when it plays host to SIU-Edwardsville Friday night in Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center. The first bout begins at 7 p.m.
"We're heading into February and this is the time of year where we want to have championship performances," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "We saw a glimpse of what we can do early in the Kent State dual and we want to continue that philosophy through all 10 weights Friday night."
The Huskies (7-7, 0-2) enter Friday's match looking to bounce back from a loss to Kent State a week ago. While the Huskies lost the match, they received solid performance at several different weight classes. Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) extended his winning streak to five matches with a 3-2 decision over Kent State's Mallie Shuster at 157 and Vince Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) won his fourth-straight match, with an impressive 8-1 victory over the Golden Flashes' Chase Skonieczny at 141.
Senior Dan Ruettiger (Joliet, Ill./Providence) evened his record to 11-11 with a 6-1 decision over Tommy Sasfy at 149. While he lost his match, 5-1, to No. 17 Brendan Barlow at 285, Dakota Greenhaw (Monett, Mo./Monett) continues to show improvement as he battled Barlow throughout the match.
NIU takes on an SIUE squad that is 1-11-1 heading into its match with Central Missouri tonight. Friday's match marks the second weekend in a row in which the Cougars will wrestle back-to-back dual meets.
