DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team caps off their regular season Sunday afternoon when they head east to battle the Buffalo Bulls.
The contest between NIU and UB starts at noon CT inside Alumni Arena.
"Buffalo is a well-coached squad and they will compete hard," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We will look to wrestle with grit, as that is what MAC duals demand for success. Buffalo is the next challenge ahead and our focus lies solely upon this upcoming match."
The Huskies hold a 6-11 record and a 1-6 mark in the Mid-American Conference coming into Sunday. Last weekend, NIU dropped a 27-6 loss at South Dakota State despite wins from Jared Torrence and Nick Harrison.
Meanwhile, Buffalo is 3-16 overall and 0-7 in conference play. After losing three of their four NCAA qualifiers from a year ago to graduation, the Bulls have struggled in the new-look MAC, as they have not won more than three matches in any of their seven conference duals this year.

Scouting Buffalo
Buffalo comes into Sunday afternoon with a 3-16 overall record and an 0-7 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Last weekend, the Bulls suffered a 22-18 loss at home to in-state rival Binghamton before losing a 34-6 contest at Eastern Michigan. UB's three victories this season have come against Sacred Heart, SIU Edwardsville and Division II member Seton Hill. The Bulls are led on the mats by 2013 NCAA Championships qualifier Max Soria, who maintains a 12-10 record on the year. NIU leads the all-time series with the Bulls, 9-5, after claiming an exciting 20-18 victory last year.
National Love for Torrence
Redshirt senior Jared Torrence has posted a career-high 16 wins so far this season. As a result, the Huskie heavyweight is ranked 30th in the most recent NCAA RPI rankings at 285 pounds. In addition to his double-digit victories, Torrence's resume boasts wins over fellow NCAA-ranked heavyweights Blaize Cabell (ranked 26th in RPI) of Northern Iowa and Riley Shaw (31st) of Cleveland State. Among MAC rivals, the Huskie is fourth, trailing Ohio's Jeremy Johnson (eighth), Missouri's Devin Mellon (19th) and Cabell.
Dubuque Open Recap
On Saturday, four Huskies - Jordan Northrup, Sal Annoreno, Trace Engelkes and Jake Cochrane - competed unattached at the University of Dubuque Open. Of that group, Northrup and Engelkes each won their weight class. Northrup went 3-0 with a pin and a major decision en route to taking the 133-pound bracket, while Engelkes was 2-0 on the day, including a technical fall and a pin, to take top honors at 165 pounds. Meanwhile, Annoreno and Cochrance advanced to the semifinals of 141 and 285, respectively before bowing out.
Here We Go Again
During the past few years, ending the regular season against Buffalo has become a sort of Huskie wrestling tradition. Since the 2008-09 campaign, NIU has ended their conference schedule against the Bulls each of those years, with the Huskies-Bulls dual being the regular season finale in five of those. Among the six duals, Sunday marks the fourth meeting between the schools in New York.

The Huskies open postseason competition March 8-9, as they head to Kent, Ohio, for the 2014 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships.
