DEKALB, Ill. – Seniors Rob Jillard and Nick Smith were named co-winners for the Bruce Swierczewski Most Valuable Wrestler Award Sunday as the Northern Illinois University wrestling team closed its season with the annual banquet.
Jillard and Smith shared the award after both qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. At the tournament, both collected one win apiece and represented NIU with pride according the NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. Additionally, both took fourth-place finishes at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships.
Fellow senior Jared Torrence collected a pair of awards on the day with the Most Dedicated and True Grit Awards. The heavyweight finished the season with a career-best 19 wins and placed fifth at the MAC tournament.
Shawn Scott took home the Most Improved Wrestler Award by posting a 22-13 record and a third-place performance at the MAC Championships after missing most of his true freshman season to injury. Meanwhile, Jordan Northrup won the Outstanding Redshirt Award after finishing with a 24-2 record in open tournaments.
Off the mat, Billy Chancey won the Upperclassman Academic Award and Sal Annoreno earned the Freshman Academic Award. Tyler Argue was awarded the Lifter of the Year honor.
In addition to the awards, seniors Sam Bennett, Kevin Fanta, Jillard, Matt Mougin, Shane Rosenberry, Parker Settecase, Smith and Torrence were recognized for their contributions to the program.
