CLEVELAND - Northern Illinois University redshirt freshmen Billy Chancey (Braidwood, Ill./Reed-Custer) and Shaun'Qae McMurtry (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township/Nebraska) have been named to the Mid-American Conference's Academic All-Conference Honorable Mention List, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Both Huskies are first-time honorees for the award. Chancey has a 3.487 GPA, while McMurtry holds a 3.2 GPA.
"The ultimate goal is to develop each man to his potential as a student-athlete," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "When young men realize the value in that and work hard for it, we can all be very proud. Shaun'Qae and Billy are great representatives of this program and have a bright future."
Chancey, a native of Braidwood, Ill., registered a 13-17 mark as the Huskies' part-time starter at 174 pounds, earning his first-career dual victory at the EMU Duals with a 2-0 victory over Clarion's Ryan Darch. He earned a fifth-place finish at the Grand View Open with a 3-2 record, defeating UW-La Crosse's Cody Grunenwald in the placing match.
The Lockport, Ill., native McMurtry tallied a 9-13 record as NIU's primary starter at 165 pounds and finished fourth at the MAC Championships with a 2-2 record. He earned his biggest win of the year when he upset nationally-ranked Zach Toal of Missouri in the opening round of the conference tournament with a 5-3 sudden victory win. Earned his first career win at the EMU Open with a 6-1 decision over Findlay's Randy Caris, then followed that with a 10-2 major decision over Purdue's Riley McClurg.
Last year, Dan Burk earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in both athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the meets that season. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
