EMU Open Notes | Live Results
DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois wrestling team kicks off their regular season Saturday with a trip to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the EMU Open.
The tournament will feature 530 Division I, II and III wrestlers from around the country competing in both open and freshman/sophomore brackets.
“What we’re looking for is to compete for seven minutes,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “It’s very early in the year and we should be in great shape right now heading in there. (We’re) looking for our guys to compete with a lot of fire. I know I say that a lot, but that’s what we preach to our guys on a daily basis.”
“I want to go out there, have our guys think one match at a time. If they wrestle hard and stick to their gameplan, then I think they are going to do very well.”
With another year of experience, this year’s Huskies will look to get off to a hot start in 2012-13 with a good mix of experienced returnees and talented newcomers. Highlighting those returnees are 2012 NCAA Championships qualifier Kevin Fanta, MAC placers Rob Jillard, Matt Mougin and Caleb Busson and Jared Torrence.
Meanwhile, the incoming class of freshmen could make plenty of noise this year. Braun Marquez, Andrew Morse, Trace Engelkes, Bryan Loughlin and Shawn Scott all recorded wins at the Wrestle-Offs on Oct. 26 and could see a lot more in the coming months.
Looking at this weekend, though, the competition will feature some of the nation’s best programs. Among the top programs in the field are national powers Michigan, Ohio State, Central Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Navy, along with the host Eagles.
“I think the way our schedule is set up, it’s designed to do just that,” Ludwig said on getting the team and individuals national attention. “We provide these guys with the best opportunities week in and week out to go ahead and beat nationally-ranked opponents. If they can do that, that’s when they start getting recognized at the national level. Ultimately, that is the goal.”

Quest for 500
Heading into the 2012-13 season, the Northern Illinois wrestling program is only two dual wins shy of reaching the 500-win mark in the program’s history. Since starting in 1931, the team has recorded 498 wins against 444 losses and 31 ties.
November will be a very busy month for the Huskies. Following a trip to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the EMU Open Nov. 3, NIU welcomes Indiana, South Dakota State, Cleveland State and Tiffin to DeKalb for the Huskie Duals Nov. 10. The squad closes out November with Purdue, Loras and Calumet in the NIU Duals on Nov. 17.
Back for more
Despite having a well-decorated class of freshmen coming in this year, the Huskies will also feature plenty of experience returning to the team in 2012-13. Of the 20 letterwinners from last season, 15 of them return this season.
Welcome to the MAC
The Mid-American Conference took a big step to becoming one of wrestling’s premier conferences during the offseason when Missouri, Northern Iowa and Old Dominion were accepted as affiliate members to the conference. Missouri and Northern Iowa will join the conference this year, while ODU enters in 2013-14.
The Huskies will get to enjoy plenty of time in DeKalb this year, as the 2012-13 schedule features seven home dates against 13 different programs. Highlighting that list are Big Ten members Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State and Northwestern, along with new MAC member Missouri
Quality over Quantity
NIU’s schedule will also have plenty of quality opponents, as they face six teams - Northwestern, Appalachian State, Central Michigan, Missouri, Kent State and Purdue - who placed in the top 28 at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
The Huskies open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 10, with the Huskie Duals. The meet features Indiana, South Dakota State, Cleveland State and Tiffin.
