DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team kicks off the 2013-14 regular season Sunday at South Dakota State, where they will compete in the 2013 Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. inside SDSU's Frost Arena.

"We are heading into this competition with our minds set on scoring and improving position at all times," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "The focus has to be on effort, attitude and execution and then the Ws take care of themselves. The team is definitely looking forward to getting on the road to begin the season with a strong open tournament."

The season-opening tournament will provide the Huskies with plenty of competition, as they are one of 12 Division I schools in the field. Among those schools are fellow MAC schools Missouri and Northern Iowa. In addition, Big Ten members Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Northwestern will send wrestlers to the meet.

Overall, the Huskies will have 19 competitors across all 10 weight classes. In addition, eight NIU wrestlers will be competing on an unattached basis.

Live results will also be available on TrackWrestling.com.

South Dakota Bound
As has been the case under Ryan Ludwig's leadership, Sunday's tournament will feature plenty of tough competition. In addition to Big Ten powers Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Northwestern, the Huskies will also contend with wrestlers from MAC rivals Missouri and Northern Iowa for spots on the podium. Additionally, North Dakota State and two-time defending Division II champion Nebraska-Kearney will have competitors in the tournament.

Keeping the Streak Alive
With 174-pounder Matt Mougin clinching an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament last season, the Huskies successfully extended their streak of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances to 42 years. The streak, which began in 1972 with Larry Johnson, has included nine All-American honors among six wrestlers. Mougin nearly made that number 10 between seven wrestlers, but came just short of advancing out of the final 12.

Official Debut
Sunday's tournament will mark the official debut of four wrestlers: Braun Marquez, Gabe Morse, Trace Engelkes and Billy Chancey. Combined, that quartet went a combined 68-34 in open tournament action. However, due to redshirt rules, those matches do not count in their career record, meaning that this tournament is the technical beginning of their careers.

Welcome To the MAC
The 2013-14 season will mark the first season that Missouri, Northern Iowa and Old Dominion will be associate members of the Mid-American Conference in wrestling. Last season, MU and UNI competed in the conference tournament only, but will join ODU in a full schedule this season. The Huskies host UNI (Nov. 23) and MU (Jan. 25), but travel to ODU (Jan. 31) this year for duals.

A Full Month
November will be quite busy for the Huskies, as they will compete in two tournaments and six dual matches across four weekends. After tournaments the first two weekends, NIU will take on Michigan, Oregon State, Clarion and Findlay at the EMU Duals, then follow that with Northern Iowa and North Dakota State at home.

Up Next...
The Huskies continue with tournament action, as they head to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the MSU Open Saturday.
