NIU Wrestling Signs Four to 2010-11 Squad

DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University head coach Dave Grant announced the signing of four grapplers to the 2010-11 NIU wrestling team Thursday. "They have outstanding credentials," Grant said. "Quite a few of them have competed and placed in national tournaments and have done well in their individual state tournaments. They're guys that have a great interest in continuing wrestling at the collegiate level." Shawn Fayette from Miamisburg High School headlines the quartet. The No. 14 ranked high school wrestler in the nation at 135 pounds by InterMat.com, he was the 2009 Division I state champion at 130 in Ohio. Fayette, who began wrestling at age five, was state runner-up at 125 his sophomore year and a state qualifier as a freshman at Centerville High School before moving to Miamisburg, Ohio. The NIU coaching staff projects him to wrestle at 141. Sam Bennett, a native of Anderson, Ind. was a state runner-up as a sophomore and was third at the 2009 Indiana State Wrestling Tournament at 152. The 16th ranked high school senior in his weight class by Wrestling USA Magazine, he placed fifth at the 2009 NHSCA Junior National Championship. Bennett is expected to wrestle at 157 for the Huskies next season. Grant also signed two local products, Charles Argue and Donny Simpson. Simpson, a senior at Romeoville, Ill., is the No. 18 ranked high school senior in his weight class by Wrestling USA Magazine at 145. He was the state runner-up at the 2009 Illinois 3A State Wrestling Tournament as a junior after moving to Illinois from Wisconsin. As a sophomore at Marantha Baptist Academy in Wisconsin, he took home the state championship at 135. Argue comes to NIU by way of Mt. Carmel High School. Characterized as a diamond in the rough by the Huskie coaching staff, Argue took fourth at the 2009 Illinois 3A State Wrestling Tournament. He placed fourth at the 2009 FILA Cadet Freestyle Championship held in Akron, Ohio last spring and has multiple wins over nationally ranked opponents and can either wrestle at 165 or 174.
The Huskies return to the mat, Saturday, Nov. 28 when NIU travels to Bloomington, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Duals, its final tune up before the Showcase Meet, which will be held Thursday, Dec. 3 vs. Northwestern at the Convocation Center.
