DEKALB, Ill. – After getting Thanksgiving week off, the Northern Illinois wrestling team returns to action Saturday when they head to St. Louis to compete in the Kaufman-Brand Open.
The action begins at 9 a.m. at Westminster Christian Academy in Town & Country, Mo. The final rounds for both the elite and amateur divisions are slated to begin at approximately 6 p.m.
"This open tournament will provide a great opportunity for the whole team to get back to the mats,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “All the guys will be competing and looking to make an impression. There are several individuals who have really been itching to compete because they have only had limited action in recent dual meet events.”
The Huskies open December after a highly successful opening month of the season. After getting 13 placewinners at the EMU Open Nov. 3, NIU won five of their six dual matches in the Huskie Duals and NIU Duals. During that stretch, the team notched their 500th win in program history (a 26-12 win over South Dakota State) and knocked off Big Ten foe Indiana.
This weekend, Northern will get a good blend of talent from a variety of levels, as wrestlers from 20 different schools will descend upon the Gateway City. Among that list are national powers Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma and Illinois.
“There will be a wealth of competition at the open on Saturday,” Ludwig said. “Coach Denney always runs a first class event and this open has been growing to include many of the toughest competitors in the Midwest, regardless of division. It should be a great day of wrestling.”

History at the Kaufman-Brand Open
Saturday will mark the fourth time that the Huskies have competed in the Kaufman-Brand Open. The tournament, which is annually one of the largest collegiate wrestling meets in the nation, is in its second season in St. Louis after spending the previous 29 seasons in Omaha, Neb., at Nebraska-Omaha. This marks the second season that Maryville has hosted the tournament.
Super Shutouts
NIU posted two shutouts Nov. 17 at the NIU Duals, blanking Calumet College of St. Joseph, 57-0, and Loras, 41-0. The two shutouts mark the fourth time that NIU has swept all 10 matches in a dual under
Ryan Ludwig, as they did the same last season to Cleveland State (38-0 on Dec. 21) and Tiffin (42-0 on Feb. 12).
The Kingpin
Just three weeks into the season, Derek Elmore is making a name for himself as the Huskies’ pin expert. Of his nine wins in 2012-13, seven have come by pinfall. On top of that, Elmore holds the top four fastest pins on the season for NIU.
Quest For 500
The Northern Illinois wrestling program won their 500th dual in program history Nov. 10 with a 26-12 win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. In its 79th year, NIU wrestling has amassed a record of 503-445-31 for a .531 winning percentage.
Big Time Win Over the Big Ten
The Huskies’ 19-13 win over Indiana on Nov. 10 was NIU’s first win over a Big Ten team since Dec. 3, 2009 - a 24-13 win over Northwestern. It was also the Huskies’ first win over Indiana since Jan. 5, 2002, when they topped the Hoosiers 19-15. Since 2000, NIU has nine wins over Big Ten teams.
A Baker’s Dozen
NIU got their regular season off on the right foot Nov. 3 at the EMU Open with a combined 13 placewinners between the open and freshman/sophomore brackets. Shawn Scott won the fresh/soph 197 bracket and Matt Mougin placed third at 174 to lead Northern.
Up Next...
The Huskies return home Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Michigan State in the annual NIU Showcase Meet. The action starts at 2 p.m. in the NIU Convocation Center.
