DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois wrestling team begins their Mid-American Conference schedule Tuesday when they take on the Kent State Golden Flashes.

The meet between the Huskies and Golden Flashes begins at 1 p.m. CT in KSU's MAC Center. This meeting marks the second straight season that these two schools open their conference slate against each other.

"MAC competition is as tough as it has ever been," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "That's the way it should be. It's an exciting time in our conference."

The Huskies will look to get back on the winning track after falling to Michigan State, 25-9, Dec. 8 in the NIU Showcase Meet. Nick Smith, Tyler Argue and Matt Mougin each took victories on the day, but several close calls ultimately doomed NIU against the Spartans.

On the other side, the Golden Flashes hold a 0-1 record after losing at No. 4 Ohio State, 27-10, Friday. However, KSU has spent the bulk of their early schedule in tournament action, where they have experienced plenty of success. Not only did they win the Navy Classic Nov. 17, but they took second at the UB Invitational to open the year and placed 16th at the ultra-competitive Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

Individually, the Flashes are led by NCAA champion and international competition standout Dustin Kilgore, who boasts a 15-0 record at 197 pounds this year. In addition, their lineup also features fellow NCAA qualifiers Casey Newburg (184) and Keith Witt (285).

History Against The Golden Flashes
The Huskies and Golden Flashes have met 25 times since NIU moved to the major college ranks in 1969. Since then, Northern has struggled to a 5-18-2 record against Kent State. The last time NIU defeated KSU was on Jan. 14, 2005, in Kent, where the Huskies took a 19-18 decision over the Flashes.

Can't Argue With These Results
In a season with plenty of excellent performances, sophomore Tyler Argue has to be one of the most noticeable in the first month. The Mattesson, Ill., native has a 10-4 record thus far in 2012-13. That mark includes his fourth place finish at the Kaufman-Brand Open where he won five straight matches in the consolation bracket. In duals, Argue is 3-0, making him the only Huskie with a perfect record (minimum two matches).

A Pin-teresting Stat
The Huskies have been adept at sticking their opponents so far this year, as the team has already combined for 28 pins in 2012-13. Last year, NIU tallied 54 pins on the year and is on pace for a whopping 103 pins this season. Leading the way for NIU are Derek Elmore (10 pins) and Matt Mougin (5), while four other Huskies - Caleb Busson, Ethan Davis, Shawn Fayette and Rob Jillard - have accounted for two each.

Hot Starts
Though just barely moving into the second month of the season, six Huskies already have double-digit wins in 2012-13. Leading the way for this half dozen is Matt Mougin with 15 victories. Tied for second are Derek Elmore and Rob Jillard with 13 apiece. Braun Marquez has 11 wins, while Bryan Loughlin and Shawn Scott round out the group with 10 each.

Pin `Em Up
Matt Mougin made plenty of noise Dec. 1 at 174 pounds by registering a tournament-high five pins in the Kaufman-Brand Open. The redshirt junior was honored for his accomplishment and even got a shout-out from The Open Mat/Amateur Wrestling News.

Up Next...
The Huskies close out the 2012 calendar year in nearby Evanston, Ill., when they compete in the 50th Annual Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30. The tournament begins Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
