The Program

As one of the longest-running athletic teams on campus, the Northern Illinois University wrestling program has a deep history infused with modern amenities.

When talking about success, the Huskies have plenty. Since 1960, the Huskies boast five national champions, 16 All-Americans and 41 individual Mid-American Conference titles. Even more impressive, though, is that NIU has sent at least one individual to the NCAA Championships in each of the last 43 seasons dating back to 1972. NIU annually takes on one of the toughest schedules in the Midwest. Among the teams they have faced in recent memory include Northwestern, Stanford, Purdue, Michigan State and Indiana, along with conference foes Missouri, Central Michigan, Ohio and Northern Iowa.

Yet, with all that history is a blend of modern facilities to support the program. The NIU Wrestling Room opened in 2008 and features 6,000-square feet of mats for practice. When not in the wrestling room, the Huskies utilize the Yordon Center Weight Room (opened 2007) and the newly-opened Kenneth and Ellen Chessick Practice Center, which opened its doors in 2013. On match day, the program hosts meets inside intimate Victor E. Court. However, for the annual Showcase Meet and other large events, the Huskies move into the NIU Convocation Center.

Academically, NIU offers a wealth of resources available on- and off-campus. As a whole, NIU is ranked in the top 10% of public universities by U.S. News and World Report and offers numerous undergraduate, masters, doctorate and professional degrees, including law, business, engineering, education and health sciences. NIU's Student-Athlete Academic Support Services gives student-athletes a wide range of resources, including academic counseling, early registration, tutoring and computer labs.

Student-athletes also experience the best of college life off campus. A quintessential college town, DeKalb offers unique small businesses alongside familiar major chains like Starbucks, Best Buy and Panera Bread. Another added benefit to DeKalb is its location, as the city sits about an hour drive from downtown Chicago.

Of course, one of NIU's greatest assets is the positive atmosphere of positive teammates, supportive coaches and a university that respects and cares for individuals. Your NIU experience will be unique and memorable and you will reach your goals. Yet, you will never forget your NIU experience and you will always be proud that you chose to become a Huskie.
