Northern Illinois vs. Western Michigan
January 14, 2008 - DeKalb, Ill.
WMU Head Coach Tasha McDowell
"We're obviously disappointed at the outcome. I felt we played a strong second half after not a good first half. Northern Illinois played real well, they had great play from their bench as well as their starters.
"At halftime, I challenged [Tiera Delahoussaye] to step it up. She's so important, gives us energy. We need her to play well. We need her to play a lot of minutes.
"In the first half, we settled for outside shots. In the second half, we attacked the basket. I felt we were hesitant in the first half and Northern Illinois took us out of our game. We like to run and we couldn't run.
"It's deflating a little bit [when NIU hit the three to start overtime], but we teach possession by possession. We had a miscommunication and we left one of their best three point shooters wide open."
Northern Illinois Head Coach Carol Owens
"It's good to be home. We spent most of the non-conference season on the road and we improved there. Now we have the opportunity to get in the flow at home. We came back off a five-day road trip and now we have three in a row at home and it's a chance to get that rhythm at home.
"We had a chance to get away with this game early but didn't do that. I'm very pleased with the win in MAC play, but in a couple of days, you are back at it. We got a balanced attack inside and outside, and rebounding has to be the key in that. All in all, I am pleased with the effort.
"[Going into overtime] I told them, we're going to win this game. And we came out and attacked the basket.
"Our starters continue to be consistent and we have a young bench. We have to rely on Jessie, Kylie and Sharí, the upperclassmen, to lead the way.
"Sharí had six rebounds in the first half and when she is rebounding that's going to help us. Ebony is going to draw a lot of attention from the other team, so when another guard is rebounding, that is key. Aileen is a big guard, she's very versatile, can handle the ball. She handles the ball well and with her size, that makes her hard to defend. I expect that kind of play out of Sharí and Aileen.
"Our plan was not to let [Tiera Delahoussaye] get 28 points. She has the ball in her hands 80 percent of the time. In the past she has not shot the three that well. We gave her way too many opportunities.
"We don't get outrebounded very much. I feel like when Ebony [Ellis] is not in the game, that hurts us. When Sharí is not in the game, that hurts. We're going to continue to work on it. If we take away half of their offensive rebounds, we have a sizable lead.
NIU Guard Jessie Wilcox
"When we score, we have enthusiasm and we play good defense. To open up [overtime] with a basket is good, it's a momentum changer. I try to take over the game, keep everyone under control. We lost that a little at the end [of regulation]. As the game goes on, after we started attacking, a lot of things opened up."
