NIU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL POSTGAME QUOTES Northern Illinois (81), Akron (70) January 20, 2007 - DeKalb, Illinois

Akron Head Coach Jodi Kest

"Stephanie Raymond is a fantastic player. She's tough to stop. She handles the ball, she can go left, she can go right, she can shoot the three. She controls the game for them.

"I was very impressed with Northern Illinois, but I was pleased with our kids' effort. I thought our kids competed well and the effort was there all game. Give credit to Northern Illinois. They did a great job of finding players open. They know their roles, they know who their shooters are and who their scorers are.

"We're a very good half court defensive team. We tried to put [Lauren] Stephenson on [Raymond] because she's one of our best defenders. But we didn't do a good job of closing out on their shooters and they shot 47 percent from the field and 40 percent from three."

Northern Illinois Head Coach Carol Owens

"Anytime we get a win in the Convo it's a very good day for the Huskies. I'm proud of Kristin [Wiener] who got her 1,000th point and Stephanie Raymond who got her 400th assist. We had some milestones today, but overall the most important thing was this win over Akron.

"Our improvement [since last year], starts with our leadership. It starts with Kristen and Stephanie. They've accepted the role and it started this summer with conditioning and carried right through. And they've been our hardest workers.

"Having the free throw shooters that we do, definitely let's us be aggressive on the offensive end. When there's an opportunity to get to the basket and get to the free throw line, it puts pressure on your opponent. We practice a lot of free throws and we expect to hit them and have the percentage that we do.

"I really thought Margaret Batteast played well today. She played 14 minutes and had six points and she really went aggressively to the offensive glass. She's healthy and she's strong and I hope she can give us more off the bench."

NIU Center Kristen Wiener

It's [getting to 1,000 points] a good accomplishment and it's nice to be at home and do it. The ovation from the crowd was nice. I looked up to Jennifer Youngblood as a freshman and she had 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and as a freshman, I never thought I'd get to 1,000 points."

NIU Guard Stephanie Raymond

"Our main focus today was to attack from the get-go - not just me, but our whole team. We wanted to drive hard to the basket and draw fouls. Mary Basic set the tone in the first 30 seconds by getting a foul and we came in knowing we wanted to attack and be aggressive."
