Northern Illinois vs. Bowling Green
January 31, 2009 - DeKalb, Ill.
Bowling Green Head Coach Curt Miller
"That was a fantastic game. No one deserved to lose. I just told my team it was counterpunch after counterpunch. Northern threw a bunch of knock-out punches but our kids wouldn't go away. Then we threw some knock-out punches and Northern wouldn't go away. We never gave up, we kept scrappin'.
"We are very, very fortunate to get out of here with a win. Carol's got this team going and I knew that would happen when she was first hired.
"That three-pointer [to start overtime] really gave us a boost in overtime, just as Northern had benefited in some earlier overtime games from the same thing. Going into overtime, we talked about not letting them get a three on the first possession.
[On what happened with 10 seconds left in regulation when Bowling Green was awarded the ball after a battle on the rebound off a missed free throw...] "There was a scrum for the ball and I think one of the officials thought I had called a time out when I was screaming get them off of her and there was an inadvertent whistle. I don't know whether we got the ball off a alternate possession or because we had the ball.
"They have a great balance of inside/outside play. You have to chase around Wilcox and York and that leaves openings inside where they have not just Ellis and Adams but four good post players with Smith and Roussouw. Those two could start for most teams in this league. They are really deep down low.
"They are a monster rebounding team with Ellis and Adams. They are clearly the best rebounding team in the league and that keeps them in games. They murdered us on the boards.
"Coming in we considered this a rebuilding year. After losing our first two games, to rattle off 18 in a row and more importantly for us, seven in a row in the league, has been a credit to our kids. They really have taken it one game at a time.
"Tracy [Pontius] has been talking all week about how excited she was to be coming back to Illinois. She had a great game. Lauren [Prochaska] started us off but it quickly became Tracy's show. I'd like more balance in the scoring, but we made it work."
Northern Illinois Head Coach Carol Owens
"Probably from a fans' perspective it was a really good game but for us it's disappointing. Down the stretch, with a minute and a half left we lost our poise in taking care of the basketball. We didn't do a good job with on Pontius but other than that, I was very pleased with our game. I felt we kept control of the game except for the last minute of regulation and overtime.
"A game like this stings. This is the best we've ever played against Bowling Green but we're not satisfied with that. We expected to win the game. We've gotten better every game in the MAC and we've got to take this back and use it to get better.
"The start of overtime was very important. They hit a big three to start it. We had a miscommunication on defense. They went up five and we had to play catch up.
[On what happened with 10 seconds left in regulation when Bowling Green was awarded the ball after a battle on the rebound off a missed free throw...] "I thought there was a time out called. They said it was an inadvertent whistle. I can't ponder on that, I have no control over that, we've got to go on.
"They were spread out covering Kylie, Jessie and Marke and you have to guard them on the perimeter and that leaves some opportunity inside for our posts. Our posts wear down the other teams."
NIU Guard Jessie Wilcox
"Playing from behind with limited time is not easy. Making that three [to start overtime] is what we like to do."
