Northern Illinois Women's Basketball 2008-09
Northern Illinois vs. Akron
February 4, 2008 - DeKalb, Ill.
Akron Head Coach Jodi Kest
"I was very proud of our kids in the second half. We were disappointed with the first half. Our post play was very poor and give credit to Adams and Ellis, who had ridiculous numbers in the first half. Give our kids credit in the second half they fought back.
"Northern has a great team. They have great balance. They have a point guard that runs the team well, shooters on the outside and a post game. You can't beat a team like Northern Illinois playing 20 minutes. In the first half, our posts were still on the bus. We weren't physical and in this league you have to come ready to play. We knew Northern Illinois was tough and they were coming off a tough loss to Bowling Green and they came out ready to play.
"I was glad to see Kara Murphy be aggressive today. The last couple games, she's only been taking 5-6 free throws. She gets her points driving to the lane and being aggressive and she got 15 trips to the line today. She's going to be our leader, going to get the double double. A couple other players stepped up - Amber and Kyle showed up in the second half. We probably needed one more player to step up. We're a young team on the road playing a quality opponent. You can't give Northern Illinois a 14-point lead."
Northern Illinois Head Coach Carol Owens
"It was a great win today, any win in the MAC is great. I'm happy with the team. Ultimately, we'd like to maintain the lead that we had, but down the stretch we hit our free throws and played some good defense. Our best basketball is ahead of us.
"I like our balance. Other teams can't concentrate on one part of our offense. Our inside game with Mauvolyene and Ebony is excellent and they have to worry about our shooters - not letting Kylie get the ball or stopping Jessie. We have really good balance and that's why we've had the success we've had.
"We got a little careless with the ball [in the second half]. The timing of our turnovers was crucial in terms of momentum. We're still learning that you can't take possessions off. [After the Bowling Green game] we talked about how we deal with adversity. I think we did [deal with adversity] down the stretch today. We've got to continue to handle it. The way we played in the last two minutes showed how we learned from the last game.
Northern Illinois Forward Ebony Ellis
"I think rebounding is very important for us. When we rebound well, we usually have a good game.
Northern Illinois Forward Mauvolyene Adams
"It's about determination. Knowing my teammates are counting on me. Kylie was saying, `keep it up, we're going to keep coming to you' and that made me feel good if she thought the ball was going in, I thought the ball was going in. "
[On what went through her head on the late free throws] "Bowling Green. I wanted to make both this time after missing that last one versus Bowling Green."
