NIU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL POSTGAME QUOTES
Northern Illinois (73), Toledo (70)
February 21, 2007 - DeKalb, Illinois
Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen
"Obviously Stephanie Raymond was the difference in the game. She scored 30 of their 73 points. We tried different people on her and obviously no one could really stop her. But I like the way our team played. We battled all the way, had it to a one point game and they made stops at the end.
"Northern shot the three really well and that was the difference in the game. I thought at times it hurt them. In the middle of the second half, they missed a few and we were able to take advantage of that. That's a lot of threes when you shoot 28 in a game.
"They're a team that thrives on getting to the free throw line and they were able to do that late.
"I wanted to keep going inside. For some reason we didn't keep doing that. But it was effective for us.
"We wanted to play hard. They shot us out of the zone. This is a tough place to play. We're not having the best of seasons. We went to Eastern Michigan last game and fell flat on our faces. In the locker room after the game, we talked about if we play like this, we can have a chance in our last two games. We're at home and everyone wants to build something up going into the tournament."
Northern Illinois Head Coach Carol Owens
"This was a great win tonight for our team. We came out shooting really well and when they made their run in the second half, we were able to withstand that. Our team all year has hit threes. Other teams know we can shoots threes, so they are hesitant to play zone against us. When we miss shots, I don't tell them not to take them and they have confidence they will hit the next one.
"I don't think [when we missed shots] that it was poor shot selection, but it points up that we need to get stops whether we are making shots or not.
"We definitely didn't want to give them a three-point shot on the well. We switched on their ball screens which may have confused them a little. Jessie made a good play on the block, I didn't necessarily want us to block the shot, I wanted us to be there to defend the three.
"What makes Stephanie such a great player is she's unselfish. We've been asking her to look for her shot a little more. I'm shocked she only had six assists tonight because she could easily have been in double digits in that as well. Her all around game is impressive."
NIU Guard Stephanie Raymond
"We wanted to run in transition and put them away early in the first half. We were able to find open people at the right times. In the second half, they put us on our heels a little bit, but we were able to overcome it. [When Toledo was coming back] I did not want our team to put their heads down. If someone missed a shot, I told them to come back on the defensive end.
NIU Guard Kylie York
"That was a huge run for us (early in the game). We're a good three point shooting team but eight of nine is unbelievable for any team. We came out on fire. Everyone was hitting their shots."
