CHICAGO-The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team dropped it's first road test of the season, falling to Chicago State, 64-57, at the Jones Convocation Center Monday night.

Turnovers and the inability to get to the free throw line cost the Huskies (1-1). NIU turned the ball over 26 times and Chicago State (1-1) capitalized converting those turnovers into 24 points. The Cougars also beat the Huskies at the free throw line, visiting the charity stripe 29 times, converting 20 of those visits for points. Conversely, the Huskies only made nine trips to the free throw line, hitting seven.

"I felt like weren't aggressive enough, getting to the basket and getting fouled," said NIU head coach Carol Owens. "I thought Chicago State did a good job of pressuring us, making us cough up the ball. Turnovers are something that's been on our minds as a staff, and we need to get better at it."

Kylie York (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) led the Huskies with 12 points and a career high nine boards, while Jessie Wilcox also finished in double figures with 11 points.

While the Huskies outrebounded their opponents, 46-28, they were unable to convert those rebounds into points. NIU had just two second-chance points.

"I thought we would have done better in the post, but we didn't tonight," Owens said. "We've got to get that focus in our post game because I think we have a good one."

Aileen Rossouw (Plano, Texas/Plano) finished the game with eight points and three rebounds. Ebony Ellis (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) had one point and five rebounds, while Mauvolyene Adams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had six points and four rebounds.

Chicago State's Laureen Pierson led all scorers with 15 points, with her teammate Jasmin Dixon closely behind with 14.

NIU will be back in action Thursday night when the Huskies play host to in-state rival Western Illinois. Tip off is 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. For tickets, contact the NIU ticket office at 815-752-6800 or log on to
