DeKALB, Ill. - Led by five scorers in double figures, IUPUI posted a 73-67 victory over Northern Illinois Tuesday night at the Convocation Center. Stephanie Raymond scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Huskies.
In a contest that was nearly even statistically and saw the score tied three times in second half, the Jaguars pulled away with a 12-6 run to close the game.
"Obviously this is a disappointing loss for us," said head coach Carol Owens. "We didn't shoot well and I didn't think we took care of the ball like I know we can. It was good that we faced this kind of team early in the year because it shows us how we have to get ready and prepared for each game. We need to learn from this and move on."
With the game tied at 61 with 4:13 remaining, IUPUI's Brykeesha Tate scored a jumper and Amy Cook followed with a three-pointer to put the Jaguars up five. The Huskies got within two at the 1:03 mark when Raymond knocked down one of her three treys of the night. IUPUI then converted seven of its eight free throws in the game's final minute to seal the win.
IUPUI's Timika Mays scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half and led the Jaguars with six rebounds.
Kristin Wiener totaled 14 points and six boards while Whitney Lowe added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for NIU.
NIU drops to 1-1 on the season while IUPUI is 1-0.
The Huskies return to action Monday, Nov. 20 with a 7 p.m. home game against Illinois.
