TOLEDO, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team picked up its first conference road win, defeating Toledo, 65-58 at Savage Hall Wednesday night.
Kristin Wiener and Jessie Wilcox each posted double-doubles. Wiener, who posted her fourth double-double of the season and second in as many games finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Wilcox posted her first double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 boards.
Wilcox had a strong second half for the Huskies (10-4, 2-1). After going 1-10 from the field in the first half, Wilcox erupted in the second half going 5-8 from the field and scoring 11 points. Her three-pointer with 4:54 left to play keyed the Huskie victory.
"I thought we played very well, especially in the second half," head coach Carol Owens said. "I felt Jessie struggled a little bit, but I thought she was determined to get through it. I thought that was not only important for her, but for the team to see that."
After getting off to a slow start, the Huskies settled in midway through the first half. They took their first lead of the game, 16-15, at 9:30 in the first half on a Raymond bucket. The lead was short-lived as Toledo scored on its ensuing possession. The lead would change hands three more times. A three-pointer just before the half by Whitney Lowe gave the Huskies a 26-25 halftime lead.
Toledo (4-11, 0-3) shot 38 percent from the field, while the Huskies shot just 29 percent. The Huskies did win the rebound battle, out-rebounding the Rockets 24-18.
The Huskies return home January 13, 2007 when they play host to Western Michigan. Tip off is 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
