Hall Of Famer E.C. HIll Picked First In Draft For Northern Illinois Alumnae Game Saturday

DeKalb, IL --- Northern Illinois University Athletics Hall of Fame guard E. C. Hill was the first pick Thursday (January 26) in the player draft for this Saturday’s (January 28) women’s basketball Alumnae Day Game at the Convocation Center.

Inducted into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, Hill is the program’s first WNBA player, a First-Team United States Basketball Writers Association All-America pick, and a current assistant to Huskie head coach Carol Owens.

Hill was selected by Black head coach Mike Korcek in the 17-player Alumnae Game draft Thursday afternoon at the NIU Office of Sports Information. Bill Finucane will serve as the head coach of the Cardinal alum quintet. The Northern Illinois Alumnae Game will be played Saturday as part of home doubleheader headlined by the 2:05 p.m. (CST) Mid-American Conference match-up between the Huskies and Ohio University in the Convocation Center.

This year’s Alumnae Game tips off at 11 a.m. (CST). The doors of the Convocation Center will open at 10 a.m.

In addition to a 1 p.m. reception in the Convocation Center’s Multi-Purpose Room, the Northern Illinois women’s basketball Alumnae will also be recognized at halftime of the Huskie-Bobcat confrontation.

“We all can’t wait until Saturday,” said Owens, another women’s basketball NIU Hall of Famer in her first season as coach at her alma mater. “It will be fantastic to see everyone again. It will be great that E. C. and I can visit many of our former Northern Illinois teammates, alums, fans, and friends. Best of all, our current players can meet some great alums who carried our school’s colors. It should be a fun afternoon. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Five members of the fabled 1989-90 Northern Illinois women’s basketball team---which was enshrined into the NIU Hall of Fame last October---announced their intentions to play in the Alumnae Game Saturday. That quintet includes guard Lisa Foss, guard Denise Dove (Ianello), center-forward Tammy Hinchee, forward Tracy Mondek (Burton), and guard Denise Lipnisky (McCance).

During that special winter, coach Jane Albright’s squad finished 26-5 overall, led the country in scoring at 94.5 points per game, concluded the regular season inside the nation’s Top 25, won both the North Star Conference regular-season and postseason tourney titles, plus made Northern Illinois’ first National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament appearance. The sharp-shooting Foss, the school’s all-time scorer with 2,500 career points, was inducted into the same HOF in 1997.

Admission into the NIU Alumnae Game is free when fans show a ticket to the Northern Illinois-Ohio game. The current version of the Alumnae Game ran for five seasons between 1998-99 and 2002-03 before a two-year hiatus.

The 2005 Northern Illinois Alumnae Game rosters:
