DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team concludes its three-game road trip when the Huskies (13-6, 5-3) take on IPFW (9-9) Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
"They are a good team. They have two really good guards that we are going to have to play good defense on," head coach Carol Owens said of the upcoming game with IPFW. "It's a road game. We have to play good defense."
NIU leads the all-time series 1-0. The Huskies won the lone meeting between the two teams Jan. 4, 2006. The Huskies defeated the Mastodons 73-64. Stephanie Raymond scored a game-high 24 points. Jenn Uptmor and Kristin Wiener each scored 12 points.
Tuesday is the rubber game of the road trip. The Huskies opened the trip in Ohio, falling to the Bobcats, 72-70, Jan. 20, 2007. The Huskies rebounded Saturday with a 58-53 victory over Buffalo. The Huskies are currently 6-5 away from the Convocation Center.
Mary Basic stepped up and played big for the Huskies. The senior tri-captain scored a game- and season-high 18 points. She was 6-16 from the field, including 4-8 from beyond the three-point line. Sophomore Jessie Wilcox was perfect Saturday. She went 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from the free-throw line. She was the Huskies second-leading scorer with 12 points.
Becky Smith, who has become a key player off the bench for the Huskies, made her first career start in Buffalo. She had six rebounds and three assists. Smith has been averaging 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game.
