NIU Drops MAC Home Opener to Ball State, 57-51
Northern Illinois dropped its Mid-American Conference home opener to Ball State, 57-51, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The loss moves the Huskies to 5-10, 0-2 in MAC play while the Cardinals improved to 5-10, 2-0 in the league's first weekend of head-to-head competition.

-- Saturday's game marks the end of a tough stretch for Northern Illinois. The Huskies are playing their fourth road contest in five games. The Huskies are 2-1, picking up wins over Ohio (Feb. 6) and Kent State (Feb. 10) before falling to Toledo Wednesday.
-- Ball State leads the overall series, 26-17, and has won two of the last three meetings. The two met earlier this year at the Convocation Center with the Cardinals pulling out a 57-51 victory Jan. 13, 2013. The two teams have split the last four meetings.
-- Northern Illinois travels to Muncie in search of its first Mid-American Conference West Division victory. NIU is currently 2-10 in conference play with both victories coming against MAC East foes. NIU knocked off Ohio for its first MAC win of the season, and beat Kent State in the next game for its second conference win. Both victories came on the road.
NIU continues its 56th season with its 44th meeting against Ball State. Ball State won the last meeting, 57-51 in DeKalb, Jan. 13, 2013. The last Huskie victory, a 58-44 triumph, came Feb. 16, 2012 in DeKalb. NIU's last defeated Ball State at Worthen Arena Mar. 2, 2011 when the Huskies posted a 49-46 win. NIU swept the season series that year, knocking off the Cardinals, 73-62, Jan. 19, 2011.
Scouting Ball State
Ball State enters play Saturday having lost two of its last three games. The Cardinals defeated Eastern Michigan, 56-34, Wednesday night at Worthen Arena after dropping games vs. Toledo and at Akron. Nathalie Fontaine leads the way for the Cardinals and is the league's sixth-leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points a game and adding 6.7 rebounds a contest.
The Huskies dropped 57-51 decision to Ball State in the MAC home opener for NIU at the Convocation Center Jan. 13, 2013. Turnovers doomed Northern Illinois as the Cardinals converted 25 Huskie miscues into 21 points. NIU's Satavia Taylor scored a career- and game-high 24 points, while three Cardinals finished in double figures with Nathalie Fontaine posting a team-high 18 points.

Amanda Corral has tallied double-digit scoring efforts in 18-of-24 games this season and is averaging 12.6 points a game, leading the team and ranking seventh in the league. She scored a season-high 20 points in NIU's 73-52 victory at Ohio. She put together a streak of seven double-digit scoring efforts Nov. 30, 2012 to Dec. 29, 2012.
The Huskies turned in their best shooting performance of the season in a 73-52 victory at Ohio University Feb. 6, 2013. Northern Illinois shot 59.2 percent from the field and four Huskies finished in double figures. Amanda Corral led the way with 20 points, hitting 7-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point territory. Ashley Sneed tied her season high point total with 13, while Natecia Augusta posted her fourth double digit scoring effort of the season. Freshman Alexis Lindstrom was a perfect 4-for-4, including 3-for-3 from three-point territory for 11 points.
Northern Illinois University boasts three players for the Hoosier state. Amanda Corral hails from Hobart, while Jada Buggs calls Elkhart home. Lacia Gorman, who is sitting out the 2012-13 season after transferring to NIU from Wisconsin, is from Fort Wayne.
It its seven victories this season, Northern Illinois has held a 2-1 advantage in the first half, outscoring its opponents 233-150 in the first 20 minutes. Conversely, in their 18 losses, the Huskies have been outscored 531-408 in the first half of its losses.
Lucky No. 13
Ashley Sneed has scored in double figures in each of the last two games and three times overall this season, tallying 13 points each time. She scored 13 points against Xavier (Dec. 28, 2012), Ohio (Feb. 6, 2013) and Kent State (Feb. 10, 2012).
Center of Consistency
The lone four-year senior on the squad, Shaakira Haywood has played in 113 of 115 games during her four-year career, the most of any player on the Huskie roster. Haywood has played in all 25 games this season and 33 straight games at NIU dating back to Feb. 16, 2012. She participated in the maximum during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, 29 and 30 games respectively, and played in 71 consecutive games from to Nov. 13, 2009 to Dec. 31, 2011. Alicia Johnson is the nearest Huskie to Haywood playing in 78 games during her three-year career.
Cleaning the Glass
Northern Illinois dominated Ohio on the boards, out-rebounding the Bobcats, 40-17, in its 73-52 victory. The Huskies did particularly well on the defensive glass, hauling in 31 boards. Senior Shaakira Haywood led the way with a career and game-high 10 rebounds, with Jenna Thorp right behind her with eight. The Huskies out-rebound their opposition 33.9-31.7 a game.
Sharing the Win
In NIU's 69-38 win over Norfolk State on Dec. 29, the Huskies racked up 14 assists on 21 baskets, including 10 on 11 first half field goals. NIU largest winning margin of the year yielded its second highest assist total of the season, coming short of the 19 it had at Morehead State. Jenna Thorp handed out the most versus NSU with a career high five assists. NIU's 9-for-15 day from three-point range was a season best in threes made.
Augusta Earns All-Tournament Nod
For the second time in her career, Natecia Augusta posted back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts as she scored a team-high 14 points versus Xavier and added 12 against Norfolk State at the 2012 Cavalier Classic. Her 13 points and three rebounds per game earned her an all-tournament selection as she went 8-for-11 on field goals and 10-for-10 on free throws. For the season, she is career high 6.1 points per game.
Making the Grade
Amanda Corral, excels on the court and in the classroom. She garnered MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors twice in three weeks during the 2012-13 season. A 4.0 student studying health sciences, Corral earned her first career scholar-athlete of the week honor Dec. 6, 2012 after scoring 19 points, grabbing four rebounds and tallying an assist and a block in NIU's victory over Loyola. Her second award came Dec. 18, 2012 following a 15-point, six rebound and two assist performance against DePaul.
Tay and the Trey
Satavia Taylor's 6-for-6 three-point performance against Morehead State set the NIU record for accuracy behind the arc in a game. She also went a perfect 4-for-4 against Ball State en route to a career-high 24 points, the most a Huskie has scored this season by five points. She ranks second in the MAC with a 42.9 three-point percentage and seventh in scoring (12.4 points per game). NIU leads the MAC and ranks 13th in the NCAA in threes percentage (36.6%).
Huskies Playing 20th Season in NCAA Division I
Overall, the Huskies are 433-465 (.482) in 20 seasons of Division I play. NIU has been to the NCAA Tournament five times (1989-90, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95).
Bennett Extended through the 2017 Season
On Aug. 22, 2012, NIU Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Jeff Compher announced a contract extension through the 2017 season for Bennett. In her first season in 2010-11, Bennett went 13-17 (7-9 MAC) to improve the win total by 30 percent overall, 75 percent in conference, from the 2009-10 team that she inherited. In her second season, she pushed the 2011-12 Huskies to one win better (14-17, 6-10 MAC) than her first year and made a splash in the MAC Tournament with a youthful roster full of nine underclassmen.
