DeKALB - The Northern Illinois women's basketball team (10-18, 4-12 MAC) open the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Miami (Ohio), Saturday, March 6 at noon (CST). If the eighth-seeded Huskies can ground the No. 8 RedHawks, NIU will face top-seeded Bowling Green in Cleveland, March 10.
THE SERIES Miami (Ohio) leads the all-times series 14-12 after breaking a five-game NIU winning streak, Jan. 27 in Oxford. Prior to the loss, Carol Owens hadn't fallen to the RedHawks since arriving as the head coach at NIU in 2005-06.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS After struggling through a 2-11 non-conference schedule, the RedHawks picked-up their play in the MAC season. With a 5-8 league record, Miami finished fourth in the MAC East, behind Bowling Green, Kent State and Akron, all of which earned first-round byes.
The RedHawks are led by Courtney Osborne, who ranks in the top-10 in the MAC in scoring with 17.0 points per game, is the likely conference Freshman of the Year.
Last time these teams met, Osborn scored 21 points, including five made three-pointers, but wasn't Miami's leading scorer. That honor went to Rachel Hencke, who went a perfect 10-for-10 from the field to score 24 points. As the only player other than Osborn to average double-figures, Maggie Boyer is also a scoring threat with 10.4 points per game.
LAST TIME AGAINST MIAMI Miami shot 63.5 percent from the field and drained 12 three-pointers, boosting the RedHawks to a 96-51 win over Northern Illinois, at Millett Hall.
RedHawk Rachael Hencke opened the game with back-to-back jumpers and her team hit its first five shots to open up a 12-4 lead. Hencke went 7-for-7 in the half with two three-pointers to come away with 18 points. She was outdone by freshman Courtney Osborn of MU, who knocked down five threes in the first and scored 19 points in the period.
Miami shot 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the field and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) on three-pointers over the opening 20 minutes to score 52 points. The Huskies were held to 29 percent shooting (9-of-31) and hit just 2-of-10 three-pointers to enter the locker room with 21 points. NIU's Mauvolyene Adams was the leading Huskie scorer in the first, hitting 6-of-10 shots to score 12 points.
Northern Illinois improved its shooting in the second half, hitting 37.4 percent (9-of-24) from the field. Adams' good scoring night continued, as she finished with 21 points. But Miami continued its hot-shooting and finished the game hitting 63.5 percent (40-of-63) from the field and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) on three-pointers.
Hencke ended the night with 24 points, while Osborn scored 21. Maggie Boyer added 10 points and had nine assists for the RedHawks. Behind Adams, Kylie York hit a trio of three-pointers for nine points. Marke Freeman had a balanced night with five points, four rebounds, four assists and seven steals, but committed seven of NIU's 23 turnovers.
