DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Jim Phillips has been named to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and will begin a five-year term on the prestigious committee beginning Sept. 1, 2007, the NCAA announced earlier this month.

As one of 10 members of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, Phillips will be part of the group which oversees administration of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, including the selection and seeding of teams for the tournament. The committee also serves as the primary NCAA contact with ESPN regarding the broadcast of the tournament, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and other basketball organizations. The committee assigns game officials for the tournament and staffs selected tournament sites from the opening rounds through the Women's Final Four.

Phillips, who chairs the Mid-American Conference Director of Athletics Council, becomes the seventh male member of the committee in its history.

"This is a great honor to be selected as a member of this group and I am thrilled to represent Northern Illinois University as well as the Mid-American Conference on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee," Phillips said. "Very directly, it is a tremendous responsibility to be able to provide opportunities for so many student-athletes to participate in a great championship such as the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament, and one I look forward to carrying out. To be certain, I have the highest regard for current members of the committee and look forward to working with them over the next five years."

Phillips and Bill Nepfel, associate athletic director at the University of San Francisco, replace current committee members Barbara Burke, SWA and Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Wyoming and Sandra Booker, SWA and Assistant Athletic Director at Bethune-Cookman University. They will join current committee members Judy Southard (SWA/Senior Associate AD, LSU), Jaclyn Silar (Associate AD, Duke), Lisa Parker (SWA/Associate AD, Boise State), Jane Meyer (SWA/Senior Associate AD, Iowa), Camden Wood Selig (AD, Western Kentucky), Marilyn McNeil (AD, Monmouth), Richard J. Ensor (Commissioner, MAAC) and Tina Cheatham (SWA/Associate Commissioner, Southland Conference).

Phillips is in his third year at Northern Illinois and was promoted to Associate Vice President in addition to Director of Athletics on July 1, 2006. The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee is the second NCAA committee he has been selected to since coming to NIU as he has served on the NCAA Women's Basketball Issues Committee for the past 18 months.
