DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University head women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett signed Amber Gray to a National Letter of Intent Monday.
"I'm really excited about Amber," Bennett said. "She was a three-sport athlete in high school and has never really concentrated on one sport. She was a gifted volleyball player, but basketball is her love.
"Her athleticism is going to help us immensely. We're thin at the `big spots' to begin with and she is a really active player that we need. I'm excited to have her join us, compete and make us a better team inside."
A native of Mukwonago, Wis., Gray comes to NIU after stellar career at Mukwonago High School. A three-year letterwinner, she led the Indians to a 25-3 record, a conference title and a second place finish in the Wisconsin State Playoffs in 2012-13. During her senior campaign, the team captain started all 28 games averaging 9.9 points a game and 9.8 rebounds a game earning second team all-conference honors and fourth team all-area accolades. The 6-1 forward tallied 40 career blocks including a career-high 14 her sophomore and senior seasons.
A three-sport athlete, Gray excelled as a member of the Mukwonago volleyball team. A two-year letterwinner, she was a team captain and was named most valuable player her senior year. She earned first team all conference and was an Honorable Mention All-State selection in 2012. She also played softball at Mukwonago her freshman and sophomore years.
Gray joins signees Ally Lehman (Niveveh, Ind./Indian Creek) Jazmine Harris (West Allis, Wis./Heritage Christian) who signed with Northern Illinois in November.
