DeKALB, Ill. - The NIU Huskies women’s basketball team announced the addition of Eastern Illinois University transfer Katlyn Payne (St. Charles, Ill./Bishop Verot (Fla.)) Wednesday afternoon. The 5-11 redshirt senior guard, who played three seasons with the Panthers, will be available to play the 2014-15 season as she will graduate from EIU this spring as a one-time transfer. Payne will enter the public administration master’s program at Northern Illinois University this summer.

“We recruited Katlyn the first time around and didn’t get her so we’re blessed to have her this time around,” said Head Coach Kathi Bennett. “She’s a proven scorer who averaged over 37 minutes and over 40 percent from the field with 79 threes and that’s what we’re missing. She brings a great deal of experience because she’s been in a lot of game time situations and has been the go-to player on her team. As much as she’ll help us, I think we’ll be able to help her because we have other options inside and outside. Adding another proven scorer to the mix does a tremendous amount for us on the offensive end.”

“It means a lot to me to come back home and play at NIU because my family lives so close to DeKalb,” said Payne, “instead of being able to only make a couple games a year, they’ll be able to watch all of my home games.”

Payne was the Panthers second leading scorer last season, averaging 13.8 points per game in 28 starts during the 2013-14 season. She finished the year with a .415 field goal percentage, including a clip of .405 behind the three-point line on 79-of-195 shooting which ranked her second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 27th in the NCAA. The senior was also second on the squad in rebounds last season, averaging 4.6 boards per game.

The St. Charles, Ill., native scored in double-digits in 23-of-28 games played and scored 20-or-more points in four games last season with the Panthers. She set a season-high mark of 26 points at UT Martin on Jan. 27, going 9-of-18 from the field, sinking 7-of-16 three-point field goals taken to set a new school single game record for three-pointers.

Payne is one of four newcomers to the Huskie’s squad in 2014-15, joining freshmen Georgia Breunig (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie), Renee Sladik (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and Kelly Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead). The Huskies, who finished 11-19 and advanced to the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, return its top-scorer and rebounders in Amanda Corral (13.5) and the duo of Natecia Augusta and Jenna Thorp (5.4), respectively.
