NORTHERN ILLINOIS WOMEN’S HOOPS OPENS ITALIAN TOUR WITH 59-57 LOSS TO UMANA REYER VENEZIA

VENICE, ITALY -- Basketball season already? Well, sort of, as the Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team opened their five-game tour of Italy with a 59-57 loss to Umana Reyer Venezia (Team Venice) on Tuesday evening in Venice, Italy.

Fighting tired legs and intense jetlag, the Huskies managed to overcome 27 turnovers and 47-percent free throwing (7-of-15) to make a late run at the Venetians, before succumbing by the two-point margin. Mary Basic led the Huskies with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. The Lemont, IL, native also grabbed five boards while helping to hold Venice to just 37 percent shooting from the floor.

“I was pleased with our defensive performance,” head coach Carol Hammerle said. “We turned the ball over too many times, but we forced them into 26 turnovers ourselves, so our defensive intensity never fell off. Mary (Basic) led us in scoring and really did a nice job all-around.

“You never know about those first games back, but I was pleased for the most part. We worked on a number of new offensive sets and got some good performances from a number of people. I though Rachel Sillar performed extremely well and got a number of steals. We played a good team that had two Americans on their roster. Michelle Maslowski, who led them in scoring, had one heck of a collegiate career at Drexel, so this team had some good players.”

Joining Basic in the backcourt was Alyssa Verdegan, who poured in eight points, while contributing five rebounds. Joi Scott led the Huskies with nine rebounds and played a game high 30 minutes.

There will be no rest for Northern Illinois’ weary legs as the Huskies return to action for a Wednesday (May 19) evening contest with Alessandria, Italy. Game time was originally scheduled for 9 p.m., but the game has been moved ahead to a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Following Wednesday’s game vs. Alessandria, the Huskies will take on Broni at 9 p.m. on Thursday (May 20) and La Spezia on Saturday (May 22) before wrapping up the five-game swing on Sunday (May 23) against Pontedera. The 28-person traveling party will return to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on May 26.

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team’s trip to Italy marks the first time an NIU team has competed outside the United States. Previously, NIU women’s basketball had only left the contiguous United States with trips to Hawaii (Hawaii Paradise Classic in 1993-94 and Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic in 2000-01), and Alaska (Northern Lights Invitational in 1990-91 and Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational in 2001-02). The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team participated at the Surf N’ Slam Invitational in Hawaii this past winter for its first journey off the U. S. mainland.
