DEKALB, Ill.-Sherri Coale, president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, announced the appointment of Northern Illinois University head women's basketball coach Carol Owens to the WBCA Board of Directors.
"I'm really excited," Owens said. "I'm very honored. Being on the board gives me a chance to take an active role in our organization. It also provides me with an opportunity to represent Northern Illinois University, and mid-major conferences, especially the Mid-American Conference. It's good to be in the company of great coaches and great minds of the game."
Entering her fourth season at NIU, Owens has emerged as one of the leaders in her profession. Not only has she built a solid program at NIU, she is currently serving as the head coach of the 2008 USA Women's basketball U18 National Team that will represent the United States at the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women, which will be held July 23-27 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is her third-straight summer working with Team USA. She was an assistant coach with USA Basketball's U18 and U19 squads the previous two summers. Both teams took home the gold.
In addition to serving on the WBCA Board of Directors, Owens is also on the Black Coaches & Administrators Board of Directors.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls. The WBCA Board of Directors develops policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the organization. They also monitor the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance and provide the chief executive officer with the resources to meet the needs of those the organization serves.
