I am so excited to report that we have secured the GOLD medal after beating Brazil tonight, 96-51. This was the best first half of basketball we have put together since our arrival in Argentina. We only had four turnovers in the first half and ended the game with 14. This was our best effort to date, and I am so pleased with the way we played.
Although we have secured the gold medal, we still have one more game before we return home. We play Argentina on Sunday, July 27th and it will be a very emotional game. We will be playing in front of the home crowd and the place will be rowdy and very loud. This will be a fun environment to play in but we must remain focused. The ultimate goal is to leave here 5-0 and gold medal winners.
As I mentioned in a previous blog, my mom is here in Argentina. She is such a huge basketball fan. I think in a previous life she was a serious HOOPER! She always travels and supports my Huskies, but coming this far to support USA Basketball has meant the world to me. Thank you mom for being my biggest fan! I am so glad we got to share this experience together.
I have also had the opportunity to spend time with some of my coaching colleagues that are here recruiting some of the members on the team. One in particular is Niele Ivey who is currently an assistant coach at Notre Dame. I coached Niele when she was a standout player at Notre Dame and one of the main catalysts behind our 2001 National Championship. It is so rewarding to see Niele all grown up and doing well in the coaching profession.
Well I must get some rest and prepare for our game tomorrow. I will write again to summarize this entire experience. I look forward to getting home to see my NIU team. I know you are all working hard and taking care of business during summer school. I can't wait for the new season to begin so we can get back on the floor together.
Go Huskies and Go USA Basketball,
