DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University head coach Carol Owens announces Marke Freeman (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) has joined the 2007-08 women's basketball team. Freeman, who transferred to NIU from Florida A&M via Lincoln Land Community College, will have to sit out this season due to NCAA rules and will retain three years of eligibility. Because she was not released from her scholarship by Florida A&M, she will be responsible for paying her tuition this year.
"We're fortunate at this time of the year to get someone the caliber of Marke Freeman, Owens said. "She's a point guard with very solid skills. She can score. She's very quick and she can pass. Even though she has to sit out a year, it gives her the opportunity to get adjusted and work with our team."
As a freshman at Florida A&M (16-16), Freeman played in 31 games, starting 14, and led the Rattlers in scoring, averaging 9.9 points a game. She also led the Rattlers in assists per game (3.4) and free throw percentage (.835). She shot 39.6 percent from the field, including 37.2 from three-point territory.
While at Lanphier High School Freeman lettered in basketball, track & field and tennis. Her senior year, she averaged 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals a game to lead Lanphier to the Class AA Sectional Semifinals. Before leaving Lanphier she set team records for most points in a season, most assists in a season and most steals in a season.
The Huskies open the season Nov. 9 when they play host to Bradley at the Convocation Center. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. Women's Basketball season tickets for 12 home games are on sale now for $50 for the general public and $45 for senior citizens.
