DEKALB, Ill. -The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference's West Division in the preseason poll in voting submitted by league coaches and members of the MAC News Media Association the conference announced today.
The Huskies finished with 184 points and received two first-place votes. Ball State was picked to finish first in the division. Since her arrival in DeKalb, Carol Owens has turned the Huskies into a contender in the MAC in a short period of time.
Last season, the Huskies finished 19-12, posting their best record since the 1993-94 season (24-6) and their most wins since 2001-02 (17-12). It was also the Huskies' first winning season since 2001-02. NIU capped off 2006-07 advancing to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2002. Stephanie Raymond also became the first Huskie drafted by the WNBA, going 20th overall to the Chicago Sky.
NIU tips off the 2007-08 season with an exhibition game against Robert Morris Nov. 6 at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. NIU's first regular-season contest is Nov. 9 when the Huskies play host to Bradley. Women's Basketball season tickets for 12 home games are on sale now for $50 for the general public and $45 for senior citizens.
