DEKALB, Ill.-The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team tips off its 2007-08 campaign with an exhibition game when the Huskies play host to Robert Morris College Tuesday at the Convocation Center. The Huskies and Eagles tip off at 7 p.m.
"It's really good for us to play another team," said NIU head coach Carol Owens. "We've been practicing against each other for the last three weeks or so. It's good to see where we're at at this point in time. We're definitely not where we need to be, but it's good to see the things we're doing well and the things we need to continue to work on."
There is a lot of unknown surrounding this year's squad. The Huskies, coming off a 19-12 record in 2006-07 season, return six letterwinners from last year's team and welcome seven newcomers to the pack, three of those red-shirted last season. The Huskies lost five players from the 2006-07 team, including three starters. Tuesday's game givens Owens and her coaching staff the opportunity to make some final decisions regarding roster spots.
"Having all these new faces is exciting on one end, and on the other end, you don't know what to expect from them," Owens said. "That's just a part of it. Everybody understands there's some growth we need to get to early on, but we're looking forward to it."
One of the known quantities for the Huskies heading into 2007-08 is preseason All-MAC selection Jessie Wilcox (Oshkosh, Wis./West H.S.). Wilcox, a junior, started all 31 games for the Huskies in 2006-07 and averaged 9.8 points a game. She posted a career-high 24 points against Miami (OH) Feb. 3, 2007, going 8-13 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line. She had a perfect day at Buffalo (Jan. 27), going 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line for 12 points.
