DeKalb, Ill.--The Northern Illinois women's basketball team is looking capitalize on the success of its 97-69 win over Illinois State when it plays host to IUPUI Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The Huskies will be searching for their first 2-0 start since they defeated Western Illinois and the University of Illinois at Chicago to open up the 1998-99 season.
One of head coach Carol Owens' goals for the 2006-07 season was to improve the offense. The 97 points against Illinois State was the Huskies highest point total in a regulation game since 1996 when NIU scored 117 against UW-Milwaukee March 2. NIU also had four players finish in double figures.
Led by Stephanie Raymond and Whitney Lowe, the Huskies jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. Raymond led all scorers with 22 points, while Lowe added 20 to the cause. Senior Kristin Wiener also had an outstanding game, posting her first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 boards.
Northern Illinois leads the all-time series 1-0. The last time the two teams met, was December 22, 1998 in DeKalb. The Huskies won that contest 80-55.
