The annual 16-team tournament began in 1994 and has had nearly 200 of the nation's Division I programs play in it, representing all 32 conferences. NIU appeared in the inaugural Preseason WNIT and fell 74-70 at Arkansas State.

-- After losing to Iowa in the Preseason WNIT first round, NIU is in the consolation round. The winner of NIU-Davidson will face the winner of Kennesaw State-Morehead State Sunday, while the loser will face the loser of the KSU-MSU game Sunday to complete the three-game guarantee of the tournament.

The Match-Up
NIU's second game of its 56th season is its first meeting with Davidson as both teams fell in the first round of the Preseason WNIT last weekend. NIU has never faced Davidson, Kennesaw State or Morehead State.

Huskies Fall in Preseason WNIT Season Opener at Iowa
NIU lost 63-40 at Iowa last Friday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the Hawkeyes used a 34-13 first half advantage to leave NIU too large a hole to dig out of. The Huskies stayed with Iowa in the second half, only being outscored 29-27, and held a 44-34 edge in rebounding for the game. Iowa's 22-10 lead in turnovers led to a 26-6 edge in points off TOs and the Hawkeyes shot 60 percent on three-pointers, the second time NIU has surrendered a 60 percent threes rate under Bennett (at Illinois State, Nov. 26, 2011).

Preseason WNIT Info
Joining NIU and Iowa in the tournament are Davidson, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, Grambling, Illinois State, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Memphis, Morehead State, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, Sacred Heart, and Sam Houston State.

Invitations for the Preseason WNIT are acquired by a program's expected success for that season, its relevant past, its conference standings, fan base, and geographical location. Additionally, teams can only play in the event once every four years, and only one school per conference can participate in the event in the same year.

The format of the tournament includes a three-game guarantee and all games will be hosted by participating schools at their home site. Round 1 winners will continue up the original bracket. Round 1 losers will be put into consolation bracket quads with two four-team pools in which each team will play two games in Consolation Rounds 1 and 2.

Two of the four Round 2 losers from the original bracket will host one of the other Round 2 losers in Consolation Round 3.

The Preseason WNIT began in its modern form in 1994. It is organized and produced by Triple Crown Sports, a national sports event company based in Fort Collins, Colo. The 16-team Preseason WNIT was originally a single-elimination exempt event, and moved to the current three-game guarantee format in 2007. Throughout the years, nearly 200 of the nation's Division I teams have played in the event, representing all 32 conferences.
