CHICAGO - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team was edged out by #19 DePaul, 71-68 Saturday night at DePaul.
"I think our expectations are higher," said head coach Carol Owens of the narrow loss. "When we go anywhere, we expect to win. We're obviously disappointed in the loss. I'm pleased with the comeback, but obviously disappointed in the loss."
The Huskies were unable to capitalize on a game-high 25 points by senior guard Stephanie Raymond. Raymond, had only five points in the first half, but erupted with 20 in the second.
Down by 12 points midway through the second half, Raymond keyed a Huskie comeback. At one point, she scored 14 straight points. She hit two free throws to tie the game at 61 with 2:27 left to play. A jumper by Jessie Wilcox gave the Huskies a 66-64 lead with 1:23 left to play.
"Initially, Stephanie was a little tentative," Owens said. "She had a little too many turnovers for her, but she did come along towards the end."
DePaul's Missy Mitideiero hit a three-pointer with 1:02 left to give the Demons a 67-66 to put the Blue Demons up for good.
The Huskies had two other players finish in double figures. Whitney Lowe finished the game with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Jessie Wilcox finished with 15 points.
The Huskies will be back in action Tuesday when they take on Chicago State at the Convocation Center. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
